Time Machine Helper

A free companion that brings your Time Machine backups into Calendar Restore from the Mac App Store — so you can restore events from before you installed it.

Why a helper?

Calendar Restore keeps its own snapshots of your calendars from the day you install it. Time Machine may have years of backups from before that — but macOS keeps apps from the Mac App Store away from Time Machine backups. The helper is a small, separate app that you allow to read them. It copies the calendar data out, and Calendar Restore takes it from there.

You only need the helper if you use Time Machine. It’s free.

Set it up

  1. Install Calendar Restore from the Mac App Store and open it once.
  2. Download the helper, open the disk image, and drag the helper to your Applications folder. Then open it.
  3. Allow Full Disk Access: click Open Privacy & Security… in the helper, and turn on Calendar Restore Time Machine Helper under Full Disk Access. If it isn’t in the list, click + and choose it in Applications. Then switch back to the helper.
  4. Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected, then click Import Backups. The first run can take a few minutes.
  5. Open Calendar Restore. Your backups are on the timeline at the right, labeled Time Machine (via the helper). Pick one from before the event went missing, then click the event and choose Restore Event.

Time Machine keeps making backups, so run the helper again now and then to bring in newer ones. It only copies backups it hasn’t looked at before.

What it does — and doesn’t

  • It copies only the calendar data out of your Time Machine backups: one backup per day, and only when your events changed since the day before.
  • The copies go into Calendar Restore’s own storage on your Mac.
  • It doesn’t change your backups or your calendars.
  • Nothing leaves your Mac. The helper doesn’t connect to the internet and collects no data.

Questions

Do I need Full Disk Access for Calendar Restore itself? No. Only the helper needs it, because only the helper reads Time Machine.

The helper says it found no backups. Connect your Time Machine backup disk, and check Full Disk Access is on for the helper.

How do I remove it? Open the helper and click Remove Helper…. You can keep the restore points it brought into Calendar Restore, or delete them. Then remove its entry from Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
